A Glance at the Origins of Yoga

Yoga is one of Indiaโ€™s greatest gifts to the world. Rooted in the Indus Valley Civilization, yoga has been practiced in India for over 5,000 years. The word ‘Yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit root Yuj, meaning to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

To recognize its universal appeal, the United Nations declared June 21st as International Yoga Day in 2014, following the proposal of Indian Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi. Since then, millions across the globe celebrate this day to spread awareness about the benefits of yoga for health and well-being.

Yoga โ€“ A Way of Life at Greenwood:

At Greenwood High School, yoga is not just an event but an integral part of the school curriculum. Being a residential school, each day for our students begins with a morning yoga session, enabling them to start their day with calmness, clarity, and focus. The daily practice of yoga instills values such as discipline, patience, inner peace, and emotional stability among our students.

The International Yoga Day celebration this year was a remarkable reminder of our commitment to nurturing holistic development in every child โ€“ nurturing not just the intellect but also the mind, body, and soul.

As the event concluded with a meditative silence and a spirit of gratitude, all participants left the yoga arena with renewed energy, glowing faces, and peaceful hearts.

โ€œYoga is not about touching your toes, itโ€™s about what you learn on the way down.โ€ Let us continue to uphold the spirit of yoga in our lives, every day!

Celebrating Uniqueness โ€“ Every Child is a Star

Every child is special in his or her own way. Just like no two stars in the sky are exactly the same, no two children are the same. Each child is born with special qualities, talents, and dreams. Some children are good at drawing, some are great at sports, and others may love to sing, dance, or solve puzzles. When we take time to notice and appreciate these differences, we are celebrating uniqueness.

In schools and homes, we often see that some children are better at certain things than others. It is easy to praise a child who gets high marks or wins prizes. But it is also important to remember that every child has something bright inside them. For example, a child who is kind and always helps others has a gift of kindness. Another child may not speak much, but may be a deep thinker and a great observer. When we celebrate these qualities, we help children feel proud of who they are.

It is natural to compare ourselves with others. Many children feel sad when they see someone doing something they cannot do. But we must remember that we all have different strengths. The world is like a big garden with many types of flowers. Roses, sunflowers, and lilies are all different, but each one is beautiful. In the same way, our world needs children with different talents and ideas.

Teachers and parents play an important role in helping children discover their unique gifts. When they encourage children to try new things and support them when they fail, children gain confidence. A simple smile or kind words like “You did your best” or “I am proud of you” can make a big difference. When children feel accepted for who they are, they grow into happy and confident adults.

Celebrating uniqueness also means respecting others. When we learn to accept people who are different from us, we create a kinder and more peaceful world. Children should be taught to respect othersโ€™ talents and dreams, even if they are not the same as their own. For example, a child who loves reading can cheer for a friend who enjoys dancing. By doing this, we build strong friendships and a loving community.

It is also important to give every child a chance to shine. School programs like talent shows, art exhibitions, storytelling contests, or sports days allow children to show their abilities. Even small classroom activities where every child gets a turn to speak or share can help them feel valued.

Every child is a star with their own light. Some stars shine brightly in the sky right away, while others take time to glow. What matters is that each star is important and special. When we celebrate the uniqueness of every child, we help them believe in themselves. We create a world where everyone feels seen, heard, and loved. So let us always remember โ€” every child is a star, and together they make the sky beautiful.

Road Safety:
A Responsibility for All

Road safety is a critical aspect of modern life, ensuring the well-being of individuals traveling on roads. With the increasing number of vehicles and the rising pace of life, understanding and practicing road safety has become more important than ever. It is not just the responsibility of authorities or drivers but of everyone who uses the road, including pedestrians, cyclists, and passengers.

ย

Importance of Road Safety

Every year, millions of lives are lost, and many more are injured due to road accidents. These accidents often occur due to careless driving, speeding, or lack of awareness of road safety rules. Following road safety measures can reduce accidents, save lives, and prevent injuries. Additionally, it ensures smooth traffic flow and lessens the burden on healthcare systems caused by accident-related emergencies.

Essential Road Safety Rules for Drivers

Drivers play a significant role in maintaining road safety. Following speed limits, avoiding distractions such as mobile phones, and wearing seat belts are basic yet vital rules. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is one of the leading causes of accidents and must be strictly avoided. Regular vehicle maintenance, such as checking brakes and lights, also helps prevent mishaps.

Safety Tips for Pedestrians

Pedestrians, too, must follow certain rules to stay safe. Always use designated crosswalks or pedestrian signals when crossing roads. Looking both ways before crossing and avoiding distractions like phones while walking are important habits. Wearing bright or reflective clothing at night can increase visibility and reduce the risk of accidents.

Role of Cyclists and Motorcyclists

Cyclists and motorcyclists must wear helmets to protect themselves in case of accidents. Following traffic rules, using proper signals, and ensuring their bikes have functioning lights and reflectors are crucial. Staying in designated lanes and avoiding risky maneuvers contribute to overall road safety.

ย

Teaching Road Safety for Children

Teaching road safety to children is crucial. They should always cross the road at pedestrian crossings and wait for the signal. It’s important to look both ways before crossing. Wearing bright clothing helps drivers see them better. Kids should never run or play near busy roads. Walking on the sidewalk and not in the street keeps them safe. It’s also essential to listen to traffic signals and be aware of their surroundings. Using seat belts in cars and helmets when cycling helps prevent injuries. Following these simple rules can keep children safe on the roads. Schools and communities must educate children about basic road rules from an early age.

The Role of Technology in Road Safety

Advancements in technology, such as automatic braking systems, airbags, and road surveillance cameras, have enhanced road safety. GPS and traffic monitoring apps also help drivers avoid congested areas, reducing the chances of accidents. Governments are increasingly using technology to enforce traffic rules through speed cameras and automated fine systems.

Awareness Campaigns and Safety Workshops

Awareness campaigns, safety workshops, and strict enforcement of traffic laws can significantly improve road safety. The government and media also play a vital role in spreading awareness about road safety measures and the consequences of neglecting them.

Road safety is not just a rule to follow but a lifestyle to adopt. By adhering to traffic laws and being mindful of our responsibilities, we can create a safer environment for everyone. Every life is precious, and a small effort to follow road safety measures can make a big difference. Let us pledge to be responsible road users and contribute to a safer world.
