Brushstrokes of Imagination: A Dussehra Canvas Art Fest @ Greenwood, Hasanparthy

In a creative celebration of the Dussehra season, Greenwood High School’s Art Club organized a remarkable canvas painting event from September 5th to October 4th, 2024. The event, which took place at the Greenwood Art Club, featured 29 talented student artists from classes 6 to 10, all members of the school’s art club. These young artists had the unique opportunity to express their creative visions through their choice of themes and styles, making the event a vibrant showcase of student talent.

The canvas painting event was designed to encourage freedom of artistic expression, allowing each student to select a theme that resonated with them personally. The diversity of subjects chosen by the students ranged from nature, cultural traditions, and festivals to abstract ideas and social themes. This broad spectrum of creative thought made the event both exciting and engaging for participants and viewers alike.

The event was guided and facilitated by the dedicated Art Department teacher, Ms. Banaja Sahoo. Her insightful direction and encouragement played a vital role in nurturing the students’ creativity and helping them develop their ideas. She provided technical advice, artistic feedback, and moral support throughout the month-long event, ensuring that each student felt confident and inspired.

The management of Greenwood Group of schools believes that such artistic events are essential in schools, as they go beyond the typical academic curriculum and contribute to the holistic development of students. Through events like canvas painting, students not only hone their technical skills in art but also learn valuable life skills. Here are some key benefits of art events:

  1. Enhancing Creativity: Art allows students to think outside the box, experiment with new ideas, and express their individuality.
  2. Emotional Development: Creative expression helps students channel their emotions in a positive manner, boosting emotional intelligence and self-awareness.

  1. Cognitive Skills: Artistic activities require concentration, planning, and problem-solving, which improve cognitive functions like memory and critical thinking.

  1. Cultural Awareness: By exploring different themes, especially those related to festivals like Dussehra, students gain a deeper appreciation of their own culture and heritage.

  1. Confidence Building: Presenting their artwork in front of peers and teachers builds self-confidence, empowering students to take pride in their accomplishments.

The 29 student participants approached their canvases with enthusiasm and creativity. Each artwork reflected the unique personality of its creator, whether through vibrant colors, intricate patterns, or imaginative concepts. Themes explored included depictions of the Dussehra festival, elements of nature like forests and rivers, and abstract representations of emotions and dreams.

This artistic diversity not only highlighted the talent of the individual students but also fostered an environment of mutual appreciation and inspiration within the Art Club.

Ms. Banaja Sahoo, with her wealth of experience and passion for art, was instrumental in making this event a success. Under her mentorship, students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and explore new techniques and ideas. Ms. Sahoo’s patient guidance and constructive feedback enabled the young artists to bring their visions to life on canvas.

Greenwood High School’s Director, Sri. Dr. G. Bharadwaja Naidu Sir, deserves special appreciation for his visionary leadership in supporting such initiatives. His encouragement of the arts has always been a source of inspiration for both students and staff, and his belief in the importance of creative expression has helped make the school a nurturing environment for budding artists.

This event not only provided students with a platform to showcase their talent but also underscored the school’s commitment to fostering creativity and personal growth.

Value and Importance of a National Language

India is a land of many languages and dialects, with people speaking hundreds of them in different parts of the country. This diversity is a treasure, but it can also create challenges when it comes to communication. A national language can bridge this gap. It serves as a tool for administration, education, and interaction across the country, ensuring that people from different linguistic backgrounds can understand and cooperate with each other.

A national language strengthens the feeling of national unity. When people speak a common language, they feel more connected, as language plays a significant role in building relationships and a sense of belonging. It also helps in preserving the cultural heritage and promoting shared values. In a multicultural country like India, a national language can act as a bond, holding together various communities and regions.

Suitability of Hindi as the National Language of India

Hindi is one of the most spoken languages in India, and it has been chosen as the official language of the Indian government. It is widely spoken in the northern and central parts of the country and understood by a large percentage of the population. Hindi has a rich cultural and literary history, and its simplicity makes it easy to learn and communicate. Hindi is also used in schools and universities, and it is the medium for many television programs, movies, and songs.

One of the main reasons Hindi is suitable as the national language is its accessibility. As the language of administration and education, it allows people from different parts of the country to participate in the national discourse. Additionally, Hindi has borrowed words from other Indian languages and cultures, making it more inclusive and reflective of India’s diversity.

However, the idea of making Hindi the sole national language has been met with some concerns. India is a country of numerous languages, with people in the southern, eastern, and northeastern regions often speaking languages like Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, and Assamese. For them, Hindi might feel unfamiliar, and they may prefer using their own languages for communication.

It is important to ensure that while promoting Hindi, the linguistic diversity of the country is respected. India’s Constitution recognizes 22 official languages, which reflects the commitment to honour the unique languages spoken across the country. Hindi, as the national language, should be used to unite the country, but it should not suppress the importance of regional languages.

Pre-Rakhi Celebrations @Greenwood Hunter Road

Schools are the best places to learn while growing. Since Raksha Bandhan is around the corner, children enjoy celebrating Raksha Bandhan at school, it can be a wonderful way to promote cultural understanding and foster relationships among students.

The word “Raksha Bandhan” is derived from the Sanskrit words “Raksha” meaning protection and “Bandhan” meaning bond. The festival symbolizes the unbreakable bond of  love, care, and protection between siblings. It is typically celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana, which usually falls in August.

The students of  Greenwood High School were engaged in making their own Rakhis as part of a craft activity. The school provided materials like colourful threads, beads, sequins, and stickers. The Greenwoodians designed and decorated their Rakhis, which helped them understand the personalization  involved in this tradition. This craft session was a fun way for children to express their creativity and learn about the importance of thoughtful gifts.

The students tied their handmade Rakhis on their classmates’ wrists, symbolizing their affection and camaraderie.

This ritual not only highlighted the importance of relationships but also reinforces the value of giving and receiving with sincerity. For many students, it is a cherished moment that strengthens their understanding of family and friendship bonds.

The process of making Rakhi serves multiple purposes:

  1. Cultural Education: Through crafting, children learn about the history and significance of Raksha Bandhan. They gain insights into the rituals associated with the festival and the values of love and protection it represents.
  2. Skill Development: Crafting Rakhis helps in developing fine motor skills, creativity, and patience. It also fosters a sense of accomplishment as students create something meaningful with their own hands.
  3. Community Building: Working together on a common project strengthens bonds among classmates. It promotes teamwork and encourages sharing of ideas and resources, creating a sense of unity and camaraderie.

The ritual of tying handmade rakhis by school kids was more than just a festival activity; it was a meaningful tradition that enriched the lives of young learners. It combined the  creativity with cultural education, helping children to connect with their heritage while developing valuable skills. As they participated in this cherished practice, they not only celebrated Raksha Bandhan but also built lasting memories and strengthened their  bonds of friendship and community.

Raksha Bandhan celebration at Greenwood High School, Gopalpur, was filled with joy and the true spirit of the festival! The story of Lord Krishna and Draupadi indeed captures the essence of Raksha Bandhan.

When Lord Krishna accidentally cut his finger, Draupadi’s immediate act of tearing a piece of her saree to bandage his wound symbolized the deep bond of protection and care.

In return, Lord Krishna vowed to protect her in times of need, signifying the sacred promise that underlies Raksha Bandhan.

At Greenwood High School, this tradition was beautifully honored as all the girl students prepared rakhis and tied them to their brothers (the boys), symbolizing their bond of protection and affection. In return, the boys fed sweets to the girls, reinforcing the bond with blessings and love.

This celebration truly reflected the values of compassion, love, and the protective bond that Raksha Bandhan represents, bringing students together in a heartwarming display of tradition and unity.
