A Glance at the Origins of Yoga
Yoga is one of India’s greatest gifts to the world. Rooted in the Indus Valley Civilization, yoga has been practiced in India for over 5,000 years. The word ‘Yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit root Yuj, meaning to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.
“Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.” – Bhagavad Gita
To recognize its universal appeal, the United Nations declared June 21st as International Yoga Day in 2014, following the proposal of Indian Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi. Since then, millions across the globe celebrate this day to spread awareness about the benefits of yoga for health and well-being.
Yoga – A Way of Life at Greenwood:
At Greenwood High School, yoga is not just an event but an integral part of the school curriculum. Being a residential school, each day for our students begins with a morning yoga session, enabling them to start their day with calmness, clarity, and focus. The daily practice of yoga instills values such as discipline, patience, inner peace, and emotional stability among our students.

Learning is not just for children. Parents can also learn new things every day. In fact, when parents enjoy learning, it helps the whole family grow. Learning should not feel hard or boring. It should feel like fun! Joyful learning helps both children and parents stay curious, happy, and excited.

Learning Is a Lifelong Journey
Learning does not stop after school or college. Life is full of lessons. Parents learn how to take care of their families, how to work better, and how to be strong during hard times. Some parents learn new skills like cooking, using a computer, speaking a new language, or even painting. These are all ways to learn. And when learning is fun, we remember more and feel proud.

Children Learn from Watching
Children always watch their parents. If they see their parents reading a book, writing, or trying new things with a smile, they want to do the same. But if they see learning as a hard or sad task, they may not want to try. So, when parents learn with joy, they become good role models. A parent who says, “Let’s learn this together!” shows the child that learning is not scary.

Joy Makes the Mind Open
When we are happy, our brain works better. We can think more clearly. We remember more. We want to ask questions and look for answers. Joyful learning makes us curious. It helps us try, even if we make mistakes. A joyful mind is a growing mind!
Sharing Time and Ideas
Learning together can also bring parents and children closer. Reading a story, solving a puzzle, or watching a science video can be fun for the whole family. It gives everyone a chance to talk, ask questions, and laugh. Parents do not always have to teach. They can learn with their children. This builds love, trust, and respect.
Finding Joy in Simple Things
Joyful learning does not need money or big tools. You can learn by planting a flower, baking a cake, walking in nature, or singing songs. You can learn from books, games, stories, or even mistakes! It is about the feeling, not the subject. Ask, “What makes me and my child smile while we learn?” That is where joyful learning begins.
Tips for Joyful Learning

However, Learning should not feel like a heavy load. It should feel like play, like wonder, like discovery. When parents learn with joy, they show their children that life is full of amazing things to know. So let’s keep learning – with open hearts, happy minds, and smiling faces!

Every child is special in his or her own way. Just like no two stars in the sky are exactly the same, no two children are the same. Each child is born with special qualities, talents, and dreams. Some children are good at drawing, some are great at sports, and others may love to sing, dance, or solve puzzles. When we take time to notice and appreciate these differences, we are celebrating uniqueness.

In schools and homes, we often see that some children are better at certain things than others. It is easy to praise a child who gets high marks or wins prizes. But it is also important to remember that every child has something bright inside them. For example, a child who is kind and always helps others has a gift of kindness. Another child may not speak much, but may be a deep thinker and a great observer. When we celebrate these qualities, we help children feel proud of who they are.

It is natural to compare ourselves with others. Many children feel sad when they see someone doing something they cannot do. But we must remember that we all have different strengths. The world is like a big garden with many types of flowers. Roses, sunflowers, and lilies are all different, but each one is beautiful. In the same way, our world needs children with different talents and ideas.
Teachers and parents play an important role in helping children discover their unique gifts. When they encourage children to try new things and support them when they fail, children gain confidence. A simple smile or kind words like “You did your best” or “I am proud of you” can make a big difference. When children feel accepted for who they are, they grow into happy and confident adults.

Celebrating uniqueness also means respecting others. When we learn to accept people who are different from us, we create a kinder and more peaceful world. Children should be taught to respect others’ talents and dreams, even if they are not the same as their own. For example, a child who loves reading can cheer for a friend who enjoys dancing. By doing this, we build strong friendships and a loving community.

It is also important to give every child a chance to shine. School programs like talent shows, art exhibitions, storytelling contests, or sports days allow children to show their abilities. Even small classroom activities where every child gets a turn to speak or share can help them feel valued.
Every child is a star with their own light. Some stars shine brightly in the sky right away, while others take time to glow. What matters is that each star is important and special. When we celebrate the uniqueness of every child, we help them believe in themselves. We create a world where everyone feels seen, heard, and loved. So let us always remember — every child is a star, and together they make the sky beautiful.
