Makara Sankranti is one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus. Usually, this festival falls on January 15. This occasion marks the transition of the Sun from the zodiac of Sagittarius (Dhanssu) to Capricorn (Makara).
Since the Sun is regarded to have moved from the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere on this day in the Hindu calendar, the festival is dedicated to the solar deity, Surya. It is observed to mark a new beginning. Many native multi-day festivals are organized on this occasion all over India.
Makar Sankranti is observed with social festivities such as colourful decorations, rural children going house to house wearing colourful dresses, very very special festive feasts, Bhogi Mantalu (bonfires), kite flying, Cock Fights, Edla Pandalu (Bull Races) etc. Another speciality of this festival are many homemade special traditional sweets. This festival really gives a bonanza to all the Gourmets.
The girls and the women folk do have a wonderful time during this festival designing Rangavallulu, singing songs around Gobbellu; Cow dung balls decorated with flowers.

Haridasu and Gangireddulu are another special feature of the festival. Each morning one can enjoy the Keertanas (songs), and Aseervachanamulu (Blessings) of Haridasulu, the tinkling bells of Gangireddulu, the and the melodious Gobbemma songs.
It has been a tradition and custom at Greenwood to celebrate all the festivals so as to see that the children staying away from their homes do not miss even the slightest part of their culture, tradition and heritage.
This year the children with the assistance of the Greenwood Art Department recreated this festival in a miniature way. They brought in a true festival look to our school, creating a small village scene. Many parents who have come to school to pick up their children for a week-long holiday had a wonderful time enjoying all this. The number of Selfies they have clicked in indeed countless.
